Nick Cage and Director Kristoffer Team Up to Bring an Ordinary Man Brilliantly to Life in “DREAM SCENARIO: Tonight, Dream of Me”

Neramitnung Film and Shinesaeng Ad.Venture proudly present the dark-comedy film “DREAM SCENARIO: Tonight, Dream of Me” the latest work from A24, opening 14 December.

Bringing the character Paul Matthews, from DREAM SCENARIO, to life on screen required close collaboration between director Kristoffer Borgli and Nicolas Cage.

It starts with the character’s look — Nick Cage tried to make Paul come across as “utterly ordinary, down-to-earth.” “Paul’s look and the way he dresses are worlds away from any red carpet, that’s for sure. There’s a bit of prosthetic makeup added to the nose, and his movements and mannerisms are different from anything I’ve done before, to give the character dimension. The goal was to make an ordinary man like Paul distinctive, so audiences could easily follow his life and his journey,” Nick Cage said.

Working with the director this time involved serious discussion about exactly what kind of character to create and how to portray his own life. The result was a shift in tone to convey that he is a follower yearning to become a leader. “Paul is a modern-day ordinary man trying to be considerate, empathetic, and community-minded. He’s spent his whole life being good to others, and now he’s reached a point where he has to become more challenging, more forceful, if he wants to move forward in life,” the director said.

Meanwhile, Nick Cage added that they discussed what tone of voice a follower-type character like Paul would use to communicate, so they adjusted it to sound less intense — and when Paul is in a bad mood, his tone still doesn’t come across as threatening. This is likely the singular approach that Kristoffer came up with.
