Ard Awat Lands an Asian Film Awards Nomination

The 17th Asian Film Awards has announced its list of nominees, and this year Ard-Awat Ratanapinta, from the film Doi Boy, has landed a nomination for Best Newcomer — making him the only Thai nominee this year.

Ard-Awat plays Sorn, a young Tai Yai man who crosses the border from Shan State to work illegally in the city of Chiang Mai. Mounting pressures and constraints eventually pull him into a dark, dangerous mission. The role earned Ard-Awat the Rising Star Award at the Marie Claire with BIFF Asia Star Awards 2023, part of the 28th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), last year.

This year’s Best Newcomer nominees at the Asian Film Awards, besides Awat, also include Tergel Bold-Erdene (Mongolia) for City of Wind, Yoyo Cheng (Hong Kong) for Fly Me to the Moon, Wang Yibo (China) for Hidden Blade, and Mihaya Shirata (Japan) for Last Shadow at First Light.
